Glass Extruders

Ø25 - Ø50 mm Billet Extruder with downfeed, tractor puller, and sealed and purge enclosure

When glass billets can only be produced in small diameter sizes because of homogeneity issues, expense, product requirements, or for non-production applications; a small billet glass extruder is the best option.   Particular applications include extrusion of Chalcogenides and IR glass compositions.

Various design implementations include top and bottom oven purging, internal purging, sealed containment upper and lower enclosures with ventilation.

The optional tractor pull system will match speed with the linear slide to allow seamless pass off from the chuck to the tractor for continuous product runs.  The feed, linear slide and tractor utilize load cell feedback to monitor tension and set limits for shut down.  The temperature controller is fully configured via the networked touchscreen Operator Interface which includes Data Acquisition, remote operation and monitoring via the Web Server, email notifications, and server synchronization.

Ø125 & Ø200 mm Billet Extruder with 100 mm wide belt tractor pull

When the capacity exists to produce large billets for production of large products or high quantities, a Large Billet Extruder may be the best option.   Particular applications include extrusion of large tubes, ribbons, irregular external shapes with various channels, preform rods, and high quantities of capillaries.

Various design implementations include top and bottom oven purging, internal purging, and sealed containment lower enclosures with ventilation.   The upper section of Large Billet Glass Extruders is not usually enclosed as the glasses usually do not require containment and the heat buildup would be immense requiring high ventilation.  The optional tractor pull system will match speed with the linear slide to allow seamless pass off from the chuck to the tractor which is a great benefit for the production of ribbon glass in continuous extrude and cut.

The feed, linear slide, and tractor utilize load cell feedback to monitor tension and set force limits for shut down.  The temperature controller is fully configured via the networked touchscreen Operator Interface which includes Data Acquisition, remote operation and monitoring via the Web Server, email notifications, and server synchronization.

Ø200 mm Billet Extruder for Tool Lifting System

The 5 ton Ø200 mm Billet Extruder is designed to be used in a production environment geared toward the production of a specific product.

The billet sleeve and oven is of a more simplified design and because of the focus on tube production, no tractor pull systems is incorporation.  The chuck is design to securely hold large and heavy cross sections in a precise and secure means.  Because a Ø200 mm sleeve and billet has a lot of mass and is especially difficult to handle at 800°C during unload, Advantek Engineering Inc. included a custom load and unload system to allow the sleeve to be raised and lowered in a safe manner.

Chalcogenide Glass Extruder with exhaust and purging

The extruder pictured above was specially designed for the production of Chalcogenide glass rod and tube geometries and therefore incorporates top and bottom oven purge, sealed upper and lower enclosure, and ports and baffles for exhaust and negative pressure.

The temperature controller is fully configured via the networked touchscreen Operator Interface which includes Data Acquisition, remote operation and monitoring via the Web Server, email notifications, and server synchronization.

Laboratory Extruder

The Ø38mm Billet Laboratory Glass Extruder was designed to fit in a laboratory research and development environment within the confines of a 9 foot ceiling.   The oven conveniently rises to allow easy removal of the extruder billet and die for quick changeover.

The custom chuck is designed for round and hexagonal geometries and has a minimum size capacity to Ø1.0 OD mm for the production and ferrules and capillaries.

Standard Extruder

Advantek Engineering Inc. has designed and built many standard use glass extruders for the productions of draw tower preform rods and clad tubing for customers having glass compositions that are not available from the large glass suppliers or whom have proprietary compositions that they wish to maintain within their control.  The oven conveniently rises to allow easy removal of the extruder billet and die for quick changeovers, as well as a much simpler means of cleaning the tooling after the run is complete.

The systems can be designed with economical controls and reduced features for tighter budgets or with fully automated touchscreen operator interface having Data Acquisition, remote operation and monitoring via Web Server, email notifications, and server synchronization.

Extruder Draw Tower with Laser Closed Loop for Ferrules

In applications where space is limited or when a customer wishes to time share, Advantek Engineering Inc. offers a custom designed combination Glass Billet Extruder and Draw Tower with closed loop Laser Micrometer Size Control and automatic cutting system.

This system will allow both preform draw into fiber, glass extrusion, or glass extrusion directly into cane or capillary and cut to length.  As this is a completely customized, the options and features are completely custom and geared toward the customers’ requirements.
